NFL + College = Great Football Action

The NFL Buffalo Bills had a good 2017 season.  They finally ended their 18-year NFL playoff drought (previously the longest active drought in the NFL and the longest active playoff drought among the four major professional North American sport leagues) with the Bills winning 22–16 over the Dolphins and the Cincinnati Bengals upsetting the Baltimore Ravens 31–27. The Bills also improved on their 7–9 record from 2016 and clinched their first winning season since 2014.  However, the Bills lost the wild card game against Jacksonville 3–10, extending their playoff victory drought to 22 years.   Their fans love them year after year, and they are the major sports franchise in Upstate New York.

College football is also strong Upstate.  If you are ranking college football programs, the top ones include the West Point Army Black Knights, the Syracuse Orange, the University of Buffalo Bulls, the University of Albany Great Danes, the Colgate Raiders, the Cornell Big Red and the Marist Red Foxes.

The Buffalo Bills are the only NFL team that plays in New York State, since the NY Giants and NY Jets both play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.  The Bills conduct summer training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, a suburb of Rochester, New York.  They have a very loyal fan base and  were an original franchise of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. The club joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger for the 1970 season.

Football is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, which is the team controlling the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with or passing the ball, while the defense, which is the team without control of the ball, aims to stop the offense’s advance and aims to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs, or plays, and otherwise they turn over the football to the defense.  If the offense succeeds in advancing ten yards or more, they are given a new set of four downs. Points are primarily scored by advancing the ball into the opposing team’s end zone for a touchdown or kicking the ball through the opponent’s goalposts for a field goal. The team with the most points at the end of a game wins.

The National Football League (NFL) consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The champions of the NFC and AFC compete in the Super Bowl the most watched U.S. sporting event in the world.

The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world.  The other major leagues are for Baseball (MLB), Basketball (NBA) and Ice Hockey (NHL).

Football is played at colleges and high schools across the country.  College games attract very large crowds that often exceed 40,000 fans to a single game.
